Longdale House Lincoln | History
Longdales House Lincoln | Bishop Grosseteste

Our History

Longdales House Bed Breakfast is located on the outer edge of the Bishop Grosseteste University campus in Lincoln. The origins of the college began in 1862 as a diocesan training school and although the name may have changed over the years, the college remains one of the top teacher training colleges in the country culminating in the award of university status in 2006.

Bishop Grosseteste University is named after Robert Grosseteste who was thought to have been born around the year 1170. Grosseteste was a greatly respected teacher, scientist and theologian who was consecrated Bishop of Lincoln in 1235.  During his lifetime he wrote many texts, including philosophical commentaries, prayers and scientific treaties.

It is believed that Longdales House used to house the head of the college and the responsibilities that they had in those days were slightly different compared to those of today, as they were also employed to ensure that the students adhered to the very strict rules of the college.

As you can see from the picture, the building has developed greatly over the years into the stylish Lincoln bed and breakfast accommodation that Longdales House has become today.  The last refurbishment of the property in 2011 saw Longdales House relaunched as a modern, up-to-date B and B offering sumptuous accommodation to meet the needs of both the business traveller and those wishing to simply relax and explore the beautiful Roman City of Lincoln.
