The City of Lincoln

For those visiting Lincoln for the first time, we would like to give you just a brief insight into what our magnificent Roman city has got to offer.  Longdales House Bed and Breakfast is a short walk from the historic Bailgate area, also often referred to as “uphill Lincoln” with a wealth of unique independent shops, boutiques and bistros.  Attracting visitors from all over the world, this beautiful area of the city will not fail to impress you.  Due to the stunning architecture and cobbled streets, the area has also caught the eye of several TV and film producers and has been used in several films such as Oliver Twist, the De Vinci Code and Downton Abbey.
Every year this area of the city also hosts the famous Victorian Lincoln Christmas Market with around 300 stalls from all over the world.  Why not sample a mulled wine, a German Bratwurst or some hot roasted Chestnuts whilst you shop to the festive sounds of the Carol singers.   The Christmas market is the perfect place to find that unusual gift for someone special.
Very much the symbol of Lincoln, towering over the Bailgate is Lincoln Cathedral which was once the largest building in the country as well as being considered one of the finest Gothic buildings in Europe.  Today it houses many beautiful artifacts and carvings, including the Lincoln Imp.  As you cross Castle Square you will find the entry of Lincoln Castle where a wealth of history awaits.  Here you can view one of the four surviving copies of the Magna Carta which was signed by King John at Runnymede in 1215 AD and the view over the city from the castle walls is not to be missed.

Leading downhill from Castle Square is Steep Hill, again featuring many unique shops including bookshops and boutiques. A short distance from here is The Collection museum offering interesting and varied exhibitions and the Usher Art Gallery, one of the premier art galleries in the region.  At the bottom of Steep Hill you will find yourself in the modern, pedestrianised city centre with a vast array of shops, department stores and also a large indoor market with local produce.

A short walk from the High Street along the River Witham brings you to Brayford Wharf which was the old industrial port of the city.  Now, after a careful programme of regeneration in this area, you will find a large selection of restaurants and also a cinema.

And, if you still have the energy, there is a great selection of nightlife in the city, including clubs, bars and the theatre.  Or for the brave-hearted, discover the spooky side of Lincoln on one of the regular Ghost walks.
Lincoln is a wonderful city to visit, but if you have more time, why not also explore the beauty of our surrounding countryside.  With the Fens, the Wolds and some beautiful coastal stretches, Lincolnshire has so much to offer.

But whatever your reason for visiting the beautiful, historic city of Lincoln, Longdales House Bed and Breakfast makes the perfect place to stay.
